Summary of Key Points

What personal information do we process?

When you visit, use, or navigate our Services, we may process personal information depending on how you interact with us and the Services. We collect your email address when you create an account, data about how you use the app, such as the movies and TV shows you save to your library, and the words you type into search. We also work out which country you are in from your IP address, so we can show the right age ratings and streaming services. We do not store your IP address in our own database, but our hosting, analytics, and security tools process it as part of every request.

Do we process any sensitive personal information?

We do not process sensitive personal information.

Do we collect any information from third parties?

If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email address from them. We do not buy personal information from anyone or collect it from data brokers.

How do we process your information?

We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.

In what situations and with which parties do we share personal information?

We use other companies to run parts of Meowie: TMDB for movie and TV information, Google and Apple for sign-in, plus the companies that measure how the app is used, work out your country from your IP address, host our database and servers, send our emails, deliver app updates, and report crashes. Section 4 explains what each one gets, and you can ask us for their names.

Do we sell your data or show you ads?

No. We do not sell or rent your personal information, we do not share it for targeted advertising, and there are no ads in Meowie.

How do we keep your information safe?

We have adequate organizational and technical processes and procedures in place to protect your personal information. However, no electronic transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.

What are your rights?

Depending on where you are located geographically, the applicable privacy law may mean you have certain rights regarding your personal information.

How do you exercise your rights?

You can delete your account and all the data in it yourself, in the app under Settings. For anything else, visit meowie.app/contact to contact us.

Section 1

What Information Do We Collect?

Personal information you disclose to us

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products and Services, when you participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise when you contact us.

Sensitive Information.

We do not process sensitive information.

Account and Library Data.

  • Account Data. We collect your email address when you register for an account to use our Services. If you sign in with Google or Apple instead, Google or Apple sends us your email address so we can create or find your account. We do not receive your password, your contacts, or your profile picture. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only ever see the forwarding address Apple gives us.
  • Library Data. We collect information about the movies and TV shows you interact with, save, rate, or categorize within the app to provide a personalized experience.
  • Search Data. When you search in the app, we record the words you type. Your search text is sent to TMDB to find matching titles, and to our analytics tool as an event so we can see what people look for. Please do not type personal details into the search box.
  • Feedback and Churn Data. If you send us feedback from inside the app, we store the message you wrote in our analytics tool. If you delete your account, we keep the reason you picked and how many days you used the app, with nothing that points back to you.

Application Data.

If you use our application(s), we also may collect or ask for the following:

  • Mobile Device Data. We automatically collect device information (such as a random device identifier created by our analytics tool, plus your device model and manufacturer), operating system, app version, language and region settings, and similar technical information.
  • Photos Permission. If you save an image out of the app, your device asks for permission to add that picture to your photo library. We only ask for permission to save, not to read your photos, and the picture is written on your device and is not sent to us.
  • Country. An outside service works out which country you are in from your IP address, so we can show the age rating and the streaming services for your region. We never learn more than your country.

Meowie does not send push notifications. The app contains no advertising identifier and no cross-app tracking.

Information automatically collected

We automatically collect certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not usually reveal your specific identity but may include device and usage information such as your IP address, device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, and other technical information.

  • Log and Usage Data. Service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect, such as which screens you open, which posters you tap, and how long a request took.
  • IP Address. Your IP address reaches our servers, our content delivery network, and our analytics provider with every request. We use it to limit how often the same device can call our API and to block abuse. We do not save it in our own database, and we have turned off IP and username collection in our crash reporting tool. Our analytics provider may store your IP address and a rough location worked out from it, such as your country or city.
  • Session Replays. Our analytics tool records a small sample of app sessions, about one in ten, as a replay of what happened on screen. Text you type into input fields and images are hidden in these recordings.
  • Device Data. Information about the phone or tablet you use to access the Services.

Section 2

How Do We Process Your Information?

We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:

  • To create your account and sign you in, including sending the one-time code to your email address.
  • To deliver the Services, including your library items and your ratings.
  • To find what you searched for. We send your search text to TMDB and show you the titles and people it returns.
  • To fit the app to where you are. We use the country worked out from your IP address to pick the right age rating for a title and to list the streaming services that carry it in your region.
  • To protect our Services, including watching for crashes, errors, and slow requests with a crash reporting tool, and limiting how often the same device can call our API. We have turned off the collection of personal details such as IP addresses and usernames in that tool.
  • To evaluate and improve our Services, products, and your experience, using an outside analytics tool. We do not link analytics events to your email address or account, text you type into input fields is hidden in session replays, and only a small sample of sessions is recorded.
  • To save or protect an individual's vital interest, such as to prevent harm.

Section 3

What Legal Bases Do We Rely On to Process Your Information?

We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason to do so under applicable law, like with your consent, to comply with laws, to provide you with services, to protect your rights, or to fulfill our legitimate business interests.

If you are located in the EU or UK

The GDPR and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on:

  • Performance of a Contract. We process your email address, library, ratings, and taste answers because we need them to give you the Services you asked for.
  • Legitimate Interests. We process usage data, search terms, and crash reports to keep the app working, to stop abuse, and to understand which features people use. We only do this where your rights do not override our interest.
  • Consent. We may process your information if you have given us permission for a specific purpose, such as saving a picture to your photo library. You can withdraw your consent at any time.
  • Legal Obligations. We may process your information where necessary for compliance with our legal obligations.
  • Vital Interests. We may process your information where necessary to protect your vital interests or those of a third party.

If you are located in Canada

We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (express consent) or in situations where your permission can be inferred (implied consent). You can withdraw your consent at any time.

Section 4

When and With Whom Do We Share Your Personal Information?

We use other companies to run parts of Meowie. They only get what they need to do their job, and they are not allowed to use it for their own purposes. This is who they are and what each one receives:

  • TMDB (The Movie Database, United States). Supplies the movie and TV information you see in the app. Our servers fetch it with our own key, so TMDB does not see who you are. Posters load straight from TMDB, so their servers see your IP address.
  • Google (Ireland and United States). Google Sign-In gives us your email address if you choose that way to sign in.
  • Apple (Ireland and United States). Sign in with Apple gives us your email address, or a forwarding address if you use Hide My Email.
  • Our analytics and session replay provider. Receives usage events, your search text and in-app feedback, device information, and a random identifier for your device. It may also store your IP address and a rough location worked out from it.
  • Our country lookup service. Receives your IP address and returns the country you are in, so we can show the right age ratings and streaming services. It does not receive your email address, your library, or anything you typed.
  • The companies that run our infrastructure. These host our database and our servers, send you your one-time sign-in code by email, deliver app updates, and report crashes and errors. Between them they hold your account, library, ratings, and taste answers, your email address, and technical details about failed requests. They may only use this data to do that work for us. Our crash reporting tool has the collection of IP addresses and usernames turned off.

Some of these companies are in the United States. When your information goes there, we rely on the standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission or on another lawful transfer method.

  • Legal Requests. We may share your information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights, safety, or property.
  • Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of our business.

Section 5

What Is Our Stance on Third-Party Websites?

The Services may link to third-party websites, online services, or mobile applications. We do not make any guarantee regarding any such third parties, and we will not be liable for any loss or damage caused by their use. Any data collected by third parties is not covered by this Privacy Notice. We are not responsible for the content or privacy and security practices of any third parties.

Section 6

How Long Do We Keep Your Information?

We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your email address, your library, your ratings, and your taste answers from our database straight away.

Two things outlive your account. We keep a churn log with the reason you picked for leaving and how many days you used the app, with no link to you. And the usage events already sent to our analytics tool stay there under the random device identifier, not under your account, for as long as that tool keeps them. Our server logs are deleted after 14 days.

Where we no longer have a reason to keep personal information, we delete it, make it anonymous, or store it safely and keep it out of further use until deletion is possible.

Section 7

How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. Traffic between the app and our servers runs over HTTPS, the connection to our database is encrypted, your sign-in tokens are held in the secure storage your phone provides, and the tokens we keep on our side are stored only as a hash. However, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.

Section 8

What Are Your Privacy Rights?

In some regions (like the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right to:

  • Request access and obtain a copy of your personal information
  • Request rectification or erasure
  • Restrict the processing of your personal information
  • Data portability (if applicable)
  • Not be subject to automated decision-making

You can delete your account and everything in it yourself, at any time, in the app under Settings. You do not need to ask us first.

If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you have the right to complain to your Member State data protection authority. In the Netherlands, where we are based, this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Withdrawing your consent: If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us.

If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at info@meowie.app.

Section 9

Do We Use Cookies?

On this website we use analytics cookies from our analytics provider to count visits and see which pages people read. They are switched off until you press Accept in the cookie banner. If you press Decline, or ignore the banner, nothing is measured. Your choice is saved in your browser so we do not ask again, and you can change it by clearing your browser storage for this site.

The Meowie app does not use cookies. It uses the analytics described in sections 1 and 4.

Section 10

Controls for Do-Not-Track Features

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems include a Do-Not-Track (“DNT”) feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online.

Section 11

Do United States Residents Have Specific Privacy Rights?

If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you, correct inaccuracies, or delete your personal information.

  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising your rights
  • Right to opt out of the processing of your personal data for targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, or profiling
